<image:title>Chalk Sound Playground - CHALK: SOUND PLAYGROUND 11AM SUNDAY 19TH JULY 2020 THIS EVENT WILL BE STREAMED VIA FACEBOOK LIVE: https://www.facebook.com/SummerStreetsFestival/posts/966354010546470 What does music look like? Can you hear shapes, colours and textures? Join Chalk for an online session exploring what sounds might look like. Led by Chalk Associate Artist, Josie Brookes, this fun playful session will see you draw, stick and create art to some cracking music which celebrates Summer Streets performers past and present. Make your pencil go wild, investigate loud and quiet sounds and think about the colours of an orchestra. In this step by step family workshop you'll create a series of artworks which you can share online. So grab your pencils, paper, some recycled materials and let's experiment! More information on Josie Brookes: Josie is a freelance Illustrator based in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. She specialises in editorial illustration, with a focus on colour experimentation, collage and print making techniques. Her published work includes children’s books ‘The Flower with Feelings’ ,‘The Making of U’ and e-book ‘My Random Digi Life’.</image:title>
<image:caption>Sound Playground is a workshop for families. The session is most suitable for children aged 6+ and their grown ups, but everyone is welcome to take part and experiment! As with all Chalk events, we’d encourage parents and carers to take part alongside their children. Let’s get creating!</image:caption>

<image:title>Kirsten Luckins - Your Summer Streets – Pocket Zines When you look back at 2020, what will you remember about your lockdown walks? When all you were allowed were the streets outside your front door, what did you find on your doorstep that was beautiful, interesting, surprising or a comfort? Poet Kirsten Luckins would like to speak with you to find out more about the routes you took, and what you saw along the way. She will transform those conversations into unique pocket-sized poetry-collage zines, and post them out as a memento of #YourSummerStreets and a celebration of Sunderland's streets.</image:title>
<image:caption>Check out the gallery above featuring artwork from the Zines that Kirsten has created for Summer Streets here, along with submissions we receive from those following along at home - don’t forget to use the #YourSummerStreets hashtag when you post your creations to your social media pages!</image:caption>

<image:title>Bridie Jackson - BRIDIE JACKSON & AUKESTRA SUMMER STREETS SONGWRITING PROJECT ‘TOGETHER:APART’</image:title>
<image:caption>As part of this year’s Summer Street Festival, musician Bridie Jackson will collaborate with Summer Streets favourites AUKESTRA to write an original song called ‘Together: Apart’, an anthem about the importance of connection and what has been keeping people and communities together despite the recent lockdown. The song will be created by Bridie and the group together via Zoom, and following this, the group will each be invited to record and film themselves singing the song. These contributions will then be edited together to create a special music video, to be released on the final day of the festival, Friday 24th of July. For more information on Bridie, visit her website. More information on Aukestra: Aukestra are a diverse collective of musicians: some are autistic, some aren’t. What all of the band have in common is a desire to produce high-quality creatively-challenging music. Lockdown has made this incredibly difficult so the group has started to explore new ways of doing the thing they love the most - making music. https://www.facebook.com/aukestra/</image:caption>

<image:title>ROB HERON - Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra don’t care what genre you choose to put them in – Western Swing, Blues, Country, Rock & Roll or whatever else– as long as you understand that they’re 100% sincere and 100% immersed in this stuff. This is no lazy pastiche, no dressing up box. They live and breathe this music and want you to get immersed with them. The Tea Pad are eight years into a remarkable story that began with four friends studying at Newcastle University and now sees them playing venues and festivals across the UK and mainland Europe. Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne but with members hailing from Orkney to Warwickshire, the Tea Pad sound draws on myriad influences – from Hank Williams to Django Reinhardt, Tom Waits to The Beatles – yet ultimately sounds like nobody else, that North Eastern Swing style that’s utterly their own and changing all the time. Usually a six piece band, for the Summer Streets live stream, Rob is joined by the band's mandolin and harmonica player, Tom Cronin.</image:title>

<image:title>JAMES LEONARD HEWITSON - James Leonard Hewitson is an indie songwriter from Hartlepool. He released his first full-band album ‘Only The Noise Will Save Me’ in February 2020, which contained songs that have been praised by BBC Radio 6, Amazing Radio, top blogs such as CLASH, Line of Best Fit and more, as well as some songs being featured on TV shows like Made in Chelsea and Tattoo Fixers. His style can be described as a mixture of indie-rock, post-punk, proto-punk and anti-folk, which hopefully offers something recognisable yet hard to pin down. JAMES was set to play at End of The Road Festival this year, after winning their ‘Play EOTR’ competition.</image:title>

<image:title>JOHN KELLY - “I have been singing since I was 8, brought up with Irish music loving parents, and vinyl and cassettes all over the house, music has been my life. Musically, I am self taught. I started a band in my teens (Another Dead Rabbit) writing and gigging whenever and wherever I could. I took on the guitar, bass and keyboards and I'm pleased to say I’m still dodgy on them all”. John Kelly is a warm, funny, passionate musician with over 30 years’ live experience. He is a lover and a (non-violent) fighter for equality, inclusion and human rights. His songwriting sits alongside that of his heroes and peers; containing all the compassion & conviction of Woody Guthrie, the fiery passion of Billy Bragg and the imaginative storytelling of Ian Dury & The Blockheads. As a solo artist and lead member of the band Rockinpaddy he has wowed crowds at gigs ranging from backroom pubs to sold-out stadiums. John’s music is informed by his broad musical tastes encompassing Irish, folk and traditional music alongside rockabilly, punk, ska and blues.</image:title>

<image:title>DAVID EAGLE - Since 2005, David Eagle has been a member of three-time BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning band The Young'uns , well-known for their comedy, with the Guardian writing in their 5& review: "a rampant humour which occasionally makes them appear more like standup comedians, mercilessly mocking one another and involving the audience at every turn ..." ""The Young’uns were bravely emotional but also very funny, thanks to the constant banter from Eagle ..." In 2018, David started performing standup. He has been crowned New Comedian Of The Year by Leicester square Theatre and at Bath Comedy Festival and Nottingham Comedy Festival. He has opened for award winning comedians Reginald D Hunter, Tom Wrigglesworth, Adam Bloom and regularly for Boothby Graffoe. He also starred in Tony Law and Phil Nichol's improvised 2019 Edinburgh Fringe show. David is blind, and his comedy often explores how his disability means the most ordinary, commonplace events are turned into surreal and convoluted dramas. Occasionally he dons his accordion (often as a spiteful repost to hecklers) and performs one of his comedy songs, such as his George Formby parody, described by the Guardian as "a comic tour de force."</image:title>

<image:title>MARTHA HILL - Northern musician Martha Hill left her rural Scottish home aged 17 to busk her way around Europe before settling down in the North East. Martha writes observational alt-pop that is both hard-hitting and catchy as hell. An energy of husky vocals and melodic hooks, her introspective storytelling delivers socially conscious themes over a backdrop of guitars, cellos and synths; thriving in reinvention and fusion.</image:title>

<image:title>JODIE NICHOLSON - Emerging artist Jodie Nicholson is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from the village of Hurworth-on-Tees, on the outskirts of Darlington in the north-east of England. Jodie’s organic approach to songwriting sees delicate melodies and emotive lyrics sit atop deep-rooted themes of melancholy and longing. Inspired by personal experiences and relationships, her music portrays heartfelt narratives of love, loss and healing. Her ethereal tracks have already picked up airplay from Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio, as well as the BT TV Music playlist. With musical influences including Tori Amos, Laura Marling, Daughter, Pink Floyd, Lucy Rose and The Staves, Jodie pairs her melodic and angelic vocals with soft piano or acoustic guitar. She’s not afraid to experiment and build upon each song’s raw foundations of guitar/piano and vocals, really bringing her home-spun recordings to life through layered harmonies, strings, drums and additional instrumentation.</image:title>

<image:title>THE RAILWAY CLUB - A SUMMER STREETS IN THE HOUSE SPECIAL APPEARANCE! After spending many months in many different studios and practice rooms, South Shields' The Railway Club finally released their eagerly awaited debut album 'How to Steer a Sinking Ship...' on the 9th of October 2015. Then they called it a day. Their final line-up consisted of original members Martin Francis Trollope and Glenn Coyne, who were joined by longtime friends and collaborators Carmen Green and Natasha Haws, themselves highly regarded singer/songwriters. Since the four amicably parted ways, they've stayed in regular contact and the idea of a reunion has been touted every few months since. Ironically, now that it's impossible for them to perform together in the same room in front of an audience, it's finally happening and hopefully this will be the recommencement of something wonderful. Since this year will mark five years since the release of 'How to Steer a Sinking Ship...', the band will finally be joining the modern world and making their back catalogue available to stream on all major platforms, as of early July 2020.</image:title>

<image:title>HOME Creative Journal - strange things? Collective presents…</image:title>
<image:caption>ONLINE CREATIVE JOURNALLING WORKSHOP For Summer Streets Festival 2021, strange things? Collective is running an online creative journaling workshop on the theme of home. They’ll be giving you prompts, tips on how to find inspiration and a step by step guide through the process of artistically exploring what home means to you - through a mixture of writing, drawing, collage and more. Your options for materials are limitless, so hold on to any newspaper clippings or photos you might want to use. There are also a limited number of free material packs that we can send out to help with your journal making. You can sign up now to get an e-mail once the festival starts, and to claim your pack of materials. The workshop will be hosted on the strange things? Collective’ website and will go live on the first day of the Summer Streets, so you can access it in your own time across the festival. Register your interest for an activity pack here: https://www.mentalhealthzinelibrary.co.uk/summer-streets strange things? Collective is an arty Sunderland-based project that looks at how being creative (and generally making a mess) is good for our emotional well-being. They are part of the Young People’s Project at the mental health charity Washington Mind, and run the Mental Health Zine Library, as well as hosting workshops and making zines with young people in our community.</image:caption>
