PERFORMING MENDELSSOHN’S ITALIAN SYMPHONY, CONDUCTED BY DINIS SOUSA

FREE TO STREAM THROUGHOUT THE FESTIVAL, FROM 7PM FRIDAY 16TH JULY!

Royal Northern Sinfonia, orchestra of Sage Gateshead, returns to Summer Streets festival for a special streamed performance of Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony, conducted by their new and exciting Principal Conductor, Dinis Sousa.

Royal Northern Sinfonia perform Mendelssohn’s celebration of the life and the passion that is Italy, inspired by his 10-month eye-opening travels through the country. Mendelssohn described his time in Italy as ‘the greatest enjoyment in life since I can remember’, and the music matches its sunshine and zest for life. The orchestra were delighted to welcome their new Principal Conductor Designate, Dinis Sousa, to their home stage at Sage Gateshead.

The Sinfonia, which was founded in 1958, is the UK’s only full-time chamber orchestra. RNS has performed several times at Summer Streets Festival and are always a huge hit, so we’re thrilled to welcome them back to the festival this year with a special online concert.

The stream was recorded at Sage Gateshead on 20th November 2020 as part of the Sage Live series.
